Phu Wiang National Park

Phu Wiang National Park is a protected area in northeastern Thailand spanning approximately 325 square kilometres across Khon Kaen Province. The park is situated on the Phu Wiang Mountains, a range forming part of the larger Khorat Plateau. What distinguishes this park from other Thai national parks is its extraordinary paleontological significance: the area contains one of the world's largest dinosaur graveyards, with numerous fossil sites yielding dinosaur bones and footprints dating back nearly 200 million years. The park's central basin is surrounded by two concentric mountain ranges, with the outer peaks reaching 844 meters and the inner range rising to 470 meters above sea level. The landscape features characteristic red sedimentary rock layers over 4,000 meters thick, a geological feature that has preserved these ancient fossils. Beyond its paleontological treasures, the park encompasses diverse habitats supporting varied wildlife and serves as a headwater source for several tributary streams feeding into the Nam Phong River system.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
