Qiangtang National Nature Reserve

Qiangtang National Nature Reserve is one of the largest protected natural areas on Earth, covering a vast expanse of the northern Tibetan Plateau. Stretching across the high, cold plains that give the region its name, the reserve safeguards an iconic assemblage of plateau wildlife including Tibetan antelope, wild yak, Tibetan wild ass, and snow leopard. Its sheer scale makes it a globally significant refuge for species that depend on intact, undisturbed alpine steppe. The landscape is defined by rolling plains, low mountains, and a network of lakes scattered across terrain that sits well above 4,500 meters. Conditions are harsh year-round: winters are brutally cold, while summers bring enough moisture to turn parts of the surface into mud, complicating any overland movement. Human presence within the reserve is limited almost entirely to a small number of Tibetan nomadic families and the staff who patrol against poaching. Established as a provincial reserve in 1993 with the involvement of the conservation biologist George Schaller, Qiangtang was elevated to national-level protection in 2000. It is classified by the IUCN as a Category VI protected area, focused on the sustainable use of natural resources while maintaining the ecological integrity of the plateau.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
