India's largest inland salt lake, a vast saline playa in the Thar Desert and a critical wintering ground for flamingos.

Sambhar Salt Lake

Sambhar Salt Lake is India's largest inland salt lake, a vast seasonal saline playa set in the arid landscape of Rajasthan, roughly 80 km southwest of Jaipur and 64 km northeast of Ajmer. Surrounded on all sides by the ancient Aravali hills, the elliptical lake stretches around 35.5 km in length and varies in breadth between about 3 and 11 km, with its surface shifting dramatically between 190 and 2,300 square kilometers depending on the season. The lake is fed by several ephemeral streams and sits in a 5,700 square kilometer catchment basin. A sandstone dam roughly 5 km long divides the lake into a hypersaline western body and an eastern zone of historic salt pans where brine has been evaporated for more than a thousand years. Temperatures here swing from around 5°C in winter to 45°C in summer, and the water itself can range from very shallow during the dry months to about 3 meters deep after the monsoon. Ecologically, Sambhar is internationally recognized as a Ramsar wetland and one of the most important wintering sites for migratory flamingos in India, alongside a broader role for migratory waterfowl. The lake has also long been the heart of Rajasthan's salt economy, though illegal extraction, falling water tables, and recurrent avian mortality raise serious questions about its long-term future.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
