Ternowaner Wald

Ternowaner Wald is a forested karst plateau in southwestern Slovenia, often referred to as Trnovski gozd in Slovenian and Trnovska planota when described as a highland. It lies roughly 50 kilometers west of Ljubljana and northeast of Trieste, stretching between the Vipava valley to the south and the upper Idrijca to the north. Geologically it belongs to the Dinaric mountain system and forms part of the transition zone between the Julian Alps in the north and the broader karst landscapes of Inner Carniola toward the southeast. In ecological character the area is a classic high-karst landscape: limestone terrain cut by sinkholes, dolines, uvalas, small karst poljes and shafts, with extremely porous underground drainage and almost no surface streams. Its climate is one of the wettest in Slovenia, supporting extensive mixed Dinaric beech and fir forests that climb toward the highest summits of the Golak massif. Ternowaner Wald is notable for several overlapping layers of protection, including the Natura 2000 site Trnovski gozd-Nanos, a European bird protection area bearing the same name, and surrounding landscape parks on its southern and northern flanks. The region is also known for the Great Ice Cave in Paradana, a globally recognized cave with perennial ice that was historically mined and even exported as far as Egypt.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
