Wadi al-Hujeir

Wadi al-Hujeir is a valley and nature reserve situated in the Jabal Amil highlands of Southern Lebanon. It stretches across the Nabatieh, Bint Jbeil, and Marjeyoun districts, covering an area of approximately 26 square kilometers in one of the most ecologically and culturally distinctive corners of the country. The reserve protects landscapes defined by ancient olive groves, with individual trees estimated to be as old as 300 years, along with extensive Valonia oak forests and emerging carob plantations. Together, these habitats form a mosaic of semi-Mediterranean woodland that reflects both the natural heritage and the long agricultural history of the region. Beyond its environmental value, Wadi al-Hujeir carries significant historical and political resonance. In 1920 it hosted a conference of anti-French revolutionaries who called for resistance and cross-communal unity, and during the 2006 Lebanon War it became known as the 'Merkava graveyard' following intense fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. It was formally designated as a nature reserve by law in 2010.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
