Alaniya National Park

Alaniya National Park is a heavily glaciated mountainous protected area situated on the northern slope of the Central Caucasus Mountains in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia. Established in 1998, the park encompasses approximately 54,926 hectares of dramatic alpine terrain spanning altitudes from 4,646 meters at Mount Uilpata down to 800 meters in the Urukh River valley. The park serves a dual purpose as both an ecological refuge with exceptional biodiversity and a region of significant cultural heritage, containing archaeological remains from the Bronze Age Koban culture and the medieval Alan people from whom both the park's name and the broader term Aryan are ultimately derived. The park lies at a continental divide between Asia and Europe, approximately two-thirds of the distance between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, with its southern border following the ridgeline along the frontier with Georgia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
