Cueva de las Manos

Cueva de las Manos is a cave and surrounding complex of rock art sites located in the deep Pinturas River Canyon of northwestern Santa Cruz Province, in the heart of Patagonia, Argentina. The site's defining feature is the hundreds of stenciled handprints layered across its rock walls, accompanied by vivid scenes of guanaco hunts, geometric forms, and abstract symbols created over thousands of years. The artwork was produced between roughly 7,300 BC and 700 AD by successive waves of pre-Columbian hunter-gatherer groups. As one of the oldest known artistic expressions in South America, the site is considered by many scholars to be the best material evidence of early hunter-gatherer life on the continent. It is both a National Historic Monument of Argentina and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its cultural importance and the remarkable continuity of its artistic traditions across millennia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
