This northeastern Greek park holds exceptional importance as a sanctuary for birds of prey, hosting 36 raptor species including the Black vulture, Egyptian vulture, and Griffon vulture, making it one of the most important raptor conservation sites in Europe. The protected area was designated under IUCN Category VI, reflecting its role as a protected area with sustainable use of natural resources, and was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage List inscription in 2014 under criterion x. The park suffered devastating damage from major wildfires in August 2023, with approximately 57% of its area burned in what was described as the largest recorded wildfire in EU history.
