El Pilar

El Pilar is one of the largest ancient Maya cities in the Belize River area, perched on the upland escarpment that marks the border between Belize and Guatemala. Unlike many famous Maya sites, El Pilar was not cleared and excavated in the open; instead, its temples, plazas, and causeways remain shaded beneath a dense tropical forest canopy that has grown over the monuments in the centuries since the city was abandoned. The surrounding 5,000 acres form a cultural reserve that protects both the archaeology and the forest environment that has reclaimed it. The site is notable for its scale, with more than two dozen plazas and hundreds of major buildings spread across roughly 120 acres of monumental architecture. Recent research, including LiDAR mapping, has revealed an extensive causeway system that physically united the ancient city across what is now an international boundary. This shared heritage has driven an ongoing effort to recognize El Pilar as the world's first binational archaeological peace park, in which Maya cultural heritage and tropical forest conservation are pursued as a single integrated goal. At its Late Classic height, El Pilar supported an estimated population of more than 180,000 people spread across its monuments and surrounding residential areas. Today the site is reachable from San Ignacio and Bullet Tree Falls in Belize, and visitors can experience ancient Maya architecture alongside the working forest gardens maintained by contemporary Maya farmers, making El Pilar a meeting point of archaeology, ecology, and living cultural tradition.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
