Greece's largest Ramsar wetland complex, where rivers, coastal lagoons, and a remnant floodplain forest meet the northern Aegean.

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace National Park

The Eastern Macedonia and Thrace National Park is a large protected wetland complex in the far northeast of Greece, stretching along the northern coast of the Aegean Sea from the eastern side of the Gulf of Kavala to the area south of Komotini. Established in 2008, it brings together some of the most important wetland habitats in the country, congregating the largest total area of internationally recognized Ramsar wetlands in Greece. The park is essentially a mosaic of three related but geographically distinct natural areas: the Nestos Delta with its remnant riparian forest known as Kotza Orman; the large Lake Vistonida and its surrounding lagoons; and the freshwater Lake Ismarida together with the Rhodope coastal lagoons to its south. These habitats blend river mouths, brackish lagoons, reedbeds, dunes, and one of the last fragments of a once vast Balkan floodplain forest. The protected area is of outstanding value for waterbirds, hosting one of the richest bird communities in Greece and supporting a long list of threatened and migratory species. Beyond its ecological role, it also sustains traditional fisheries, agriculture, and pastoralism in adjacent areas, making it a key landscape at the intersection of natural heritage and regional livelihood.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
