Norway's largest inland delta and a Ramsar wetland of international importance

Nordre Øyeren Nature Reserve

Nordre Øyeren Nature Reserve is a protected wetland in Akershus county in southeastern Norway, situated at the confluence of the rivers Glomma, Leira, and Nitelva where they meet the lake Øyeren. It protects the largest inland delta in the Nordic countries, a landscape of islands, shallow bays, channels, mudflats, and floodplains created by centuries of river deposition. The reserve is recognized internationally as a Ramsar site because of its exceptional importance for migratory waterbirds, both as a staging area during the spring and autumn migrations and as a habitat for breeding species. Its mosaic of aquatic, marsh, meadow, and island habitats supports a rich diversity of plants and animals that is unusual for an inland Norwegian location. Beyond its ecological value, Nordre Øyeren is a landmark in Norwegian conservation history. Established in the 1970s, it combines national nature reserve protection with international wetland recognition, making it one of the most significant inland freshwater protected areas in Scandinavia.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
