Prehistoric rock art meets Mekong River cliffs in Thailand's northeast

Pha Taem National Park

Pha Taem National Park occupies a dramatic stretch of the Mekong River corridor in Ubon Ratchathani Province, northeastern Thailand. Established on 31 December 1991, the park spans approximately 340 square kilometres along the Thai-Laotian border, making it Thailand's longest national park boundary. The landscape is dominated by rugged sandstone cliffs that rise sharply from the river, Dipterocarp forests covering the rolling terrain, and distinctive geological formations including the famous mushroom rocks created by differential erosion. What sets Pha Taem apart is its extraordinary archaeological heritage. The park contains extensive prehistoric rock art estimated to be between 3,000 and 4,000 years old, with over 300 images distributed across four main groups along cliff faces, the largest extending 180 meters in length. These pictographs depict humanoid figures, handprints, and animals including the giant Mekong catfish, a species considered sacred in local tradition. The park also claims the largest flower field in Thailand and serves as a popular destination for witnessing the first sunrise of the New Year to illuminate Thai territory.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
