Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's largest national park and one of the oldest in Southeast Europe, spanning approximately 297 square kilometers of forested mountain terrain in the central Dinaric Alps. The park is renowned for its spectacular chain of 16 terraced lakes, connected by a series of cascading waterfalls and travertine barriers, creating one of the most visually striking natural landscapes in Europe. The lakes are arranged in two main groups—the upper and lower—each with distinct character, coloration, and surrounding vegetation. The upper lakes sit at higher elevations surrounded by dense beech and spruce forests, while the lower lakes are smaller, more numerous, and deeply set in a canyon formed by the Korana River. The entire system is fed by surface and groundwater flows that deposit calcium carbonate on moss and algae, slowly building the terraced barriers that create the waterfalls. The park was established in 1949 and later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, recognized as one of the most outstanding examples of natural landscape evolution in Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
