Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve

The Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve is a French national nature reserve protecting one of the most important estuarine ecosystems on the northern coast of France. Located in the Hauts-de-France region within the larger Baie de Somme estuary, it safeguards a vast mosaic of tidal mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, and coastal habitats along the Picardy shoreline. Established in 1994 as France's 118th national nature reserve, the protected area centers on a section of the Somme estuary between the Pointe du Hourdel and the mouth of the Maye river, and includes the terrestrial area of the Marquenterre park. The reserve sits within a wider network of coastal protection, forming part of the Picard Estuaries and Opale Sea Marine Natural Park since 2012. Its ecological significance is international. The estuary serves as a vital stopover, wintering site, and breeding ground for migratory birds, and hosts one of France's most important colonies of harbor seals. The reserve is recognized under the Ramsar Convention and within the European Natura 2000 network, underscoring its role in protecting estuarine biodiversity at a continental scale.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
