Riserva Naturale Regionale Marina di Vasto

The Riserva Naturale Regionale Marina di Vasto is a small but ecologically significant protected area along the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, in southern Italy. Established in 2007, it covers 57 hectares of coastal strip stretching about 3 kilometers in length across the municipalities of Vasto and San Salvo, in the Province of Chieti. The reserve is recognized as one of the last remaining natural and semi-natural beaches in the Abruzzo region, preserving an uncommon combination of dune, wetland, and Mediterranean botanical habitats within a single narrow coastal band. Its setting is defined by the Adriatic shoreline on one side and the urbanized, tourist residential hinterland on the other, with the Adriatic railway line and the Adriatic cycle route running through it. Inland, agricultural landscapes and small woodland patches frame the reserve, while the historic center of Vasto perches along the edge of the coastal cliff. Despite its compact size, the area protects a transitional coastal ecosystem where freshwater streams, brackish wetlands, and dune communities converge, making it an important refuge for specialized flora and fauna in a heavily developed coastal region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
