Rumanyika-Karagwe National Park

Rumanyika-Karagwe National Park is a protected wilderness area in the northwest of Tanzania, established in 2019 in the Kagera Region. The park spans approximately 247 square kilometers across Kyerwa District and Karagwe District, occupying a stretch of rolling savannah landscape in one of Tanzania's most productive agricultural zones. It was created to protect a significant tract of Tanzania's eastern African savannah ecosystem and the wildlife it supports. The park carries deep historical significance, being named after King Rumanyika I Orugundu, the famed ruler of the Karagwe Kingdom who led the kingdom through its golden age from 1855 to 1882. Prior to national park status, the area was designated as the Rumanyika Orugundu Game Reserve in honor of this historical figure. The park forms part of Tanzania's network of protected areas managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
