Valday National Park

Valday National Park is a large protected area in northwestern Russia, established in 1990 to safeguard a distinctive lake-and-forest landscape on the northern edge of the Valdai Hills. The park lies within Novgorod Oblast and stretches across the Okulovsky, Valdaysky, and Demyansky districts, encompassing roughly 1,585 square kilometers of upland terrain riddled with glacial lakes and dense woodland. Beyond its natural setting, the park preserves a notable concentration of cultural heritage. Its territory includes dozens of archaeological sites, historic manor parks, wooden and stone architecture from the 17th through 19th centuries, and the Iversky Monastery on Lake Valdai, founded in 1653 by Patriarch Nikon. The town of Valday itself, which gave the park its name, marks its 500th anniversary in the 1990s and serves as a gateway for visitors arriving from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The park's combination of glacial lakes, coniferous and mixed forests, raised bogs, and well-documented cultural layers makes it one of the most recognizable protected landscapes of the Russian Northwest. It functions both as a conservation area for the Valdai upland ecosystems and as a recreation zone for residents of the country's two largest cities.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
