Barbilla National Park

Barbilla National Park is a protected area in the Caribbean La Amistad Conservation Area of Costa Rica, situated on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera de Talamanca. Established in 1982, the park encompasses approximately 119 square kilometers of humid lowland tropical forest, protecting the Dantas River watershed as well as Laguna Ayil and Cerro Tigre. The park spans parts of both Cartago and Limón Provinces in eastern Costa Rica. What distinguishes Barbilla from many of Costa Rica's more heavily visited parks is its relative remoteness and low visitor numbers, which have allowed its ecosystems to remain ecologically rich and diverse. The park holds additional significance as the ancestral territory of the Cabécar people, the second-largest indigenous group in Costa Rica, and sits adjacent to the Chirripó Indigenous Reserve. Access requires traveling an unpaved road approximately 17 kilometers in length from the town of Siquirres, with the park headquarters located outside the protected area in Brisas de Pacuarito.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
