Barrington Tops State Conservation Area

Barrington Tops State Conservation Area is a protected landscape in the Barrington Tops region of New South Wales, Australia. It lies on a high plateau at the edge of the Mount Royal Range and adjoins the larger Barrington Tops National Park, forming part of a continuous network of rainforest and upland habitats. The conservation area was established in January 2003, building on land that was previously managed as the Polblue and Barrington Tops Crown Reserves. Although classified as a conservation area rather than a national park, the reserve plays an important ecological role. It falls within the broader Gondwana Rainforests system, a chain of ancient forests that extends northwest from Newcastle into Queensland and supports an exceptional number of threatened species. Unlike the neighbouring national park, the State Conservation Area allows limited mining activity, a distinction that reflects its different management category rather than its ecological value. The area is defined by cool plateau environments, montane forests, and swamp systems such as the well-known Polblue Swamp below Mount Polblue. Geologically, the region carries the influence of the ancient Barrington Volcano, whose rocks produced the zircon, sapphire, and ruby deposits found in and around the conservation area during the Eocene epoch.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
