Ancient Jewish necropolis and archaeological treasure in the Lower Galilee

Beit She'arim National Park

Beit She'arim National Park is a significant archaeological and historical site in northern Israel, protecting one of the most important ancient Jewish burial complexes in the world. The park sits in the southern foothills of the Lower Galilee, approximately 20 kilometers east of Haifa, and encompasses both the extensive necropolis carved into soft limestone and the remains of the ancient Jewish town that once thrived there. The necropolis, in use from the first to fourth centuries CE, contains more than 30 burial cave systems with elaborate catacombs, mausoleums, and sarcophagi adorned with Jewish symbols, geometric decoration, and figures from Hellenistic myth. The site reached its peak in the late second century when the Sanhedrin, led by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi, relocated to Beit She'arim, establishing it as a major center of Jewish learning. The necropolis was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 under the title Necropolis of Beit She'arim: A Landmark of Jewish Renewal.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
