Chashma and Taunsa Barrage Dolphin Sanctuary

The Chashma and Taunsa Barrage Dolphin Sanctuary is a protected riverine reserve in Mianwali District, in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Set along a significant stretch of the Indus River between the Chashma and Taunsa barrages, the sanctuary was opened to the public in 1972 and has since become one of the most important freshwater refuges in South Asia for the endangered Indus river dolphin. The sanctuary's primary significance lies in its role as a breeding and wintering habitat for aquatic wildlife. It is regarded as the largest preservation area for the Indus river dolphin, also known as the blind dolphin, a species endemic to the Indus River system. Beyond its cetacean importance, the sanctuary regularly supports around 20,000 waterbirds, making it one of the more significant inland wetland bird areas in Pakistan. In addition to its ecological value, the sanctuary is viewed as a strong candidate for the development of eco-tourism in this part of Punjab. Its accessibility and the unusual presence of an endemic freshwater dolphin make it a distinctive conservation and wildlife observation site within Pakistan's protected-area network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
