Indio Maíz Biological Reserve

Indio Maíz Biological Reserve lies in the southeastern corner of Nicaragua, bordering the San Juan River and Costa Rica, and is one of the largest protected lowland forest systems in Central America. Covering roughly 3,180 square kilometers of humid tropical rainforest, it is Nicaragua's second largest lowland rainforest reserve after Bosawás and forms a key link in the proposed Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. The reserve holds an exceptionally high concentration of biodiversity, with more recorded species of trees, birds, and insects than all of Europe combined; its wildlife includes jaguars, Baird's tapirs, great green macaws, harpy eagles, and the freshwater Nicaragua shark in the bordering San Juan River. Approximately seventy percent of the reserve overlaps with the territory administered by the Rama-Kriol Territorial Government, giving the area a distinctive legal and cultural framework in which indigenous Rama and Kriol people hold rights over much of the land. Although it is one of the most ecologically significant reserves in the region, most of the area remains off-limits to tourists. Access is limited to guided boat tours from El Castillo on the Bartola River or from Greytown, reflecting both the reserve's protected status and the lack of overland infrastructure through such dense rainforest. In recent decades the reserve has faced escalating pressure from agricultural expansion, particularly oil palm and cattle ranching, with deforestation concentrating along its northern and western flanks. Internal colonization since the mid-1990s, the lingering effects of Hurricane Otto in 2016, and major forest fires in April 2018 have further intensified ecological stress. Conservation and indigenous groups have organized, including the Unión de Organizaciones Ambientalistas and the Batallón Cívico Indio-Maíz, to push for stronger protection and enforcement.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
