Europe's only High Arctic steppe, protecting Svalbard's longest fjord

Indre Wijdefjorden National Park

Indre Wijdefjorden National Park is located in the steep fjord landscape of northern Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago of Norway. Established on 9 September 2005, it protects the inner portion of Wijdefjorden, which at 108 kilometres is the longest fjord on Svalbard. The park covers 1,127 square kilometres, making it the smallest national park in Svalbard, with 745 square kilometres of land and 382 square kilometres of marine area. The park encompasses a remarkable High Arctic environment where extremely low precipitation combined with basic, mineral-rich earth has produced Europe's only High Arctic steppe—a landscape more commonly found in the far northern Canadian Arctic than in Europe. This unique ecological character, along with several endemic plant species found nowhere else in Svalbard, makes the area exceptionally significant for conservation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
