Kolland en Overlangbroek

Kolland en Overlangbroek is a compact protected nature area in the central Netherlands, situated between the town of Wijk bij Duurstede and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug ridge. Although it covers only about 110 hectares, it brings together two historic estates, Landgoed Kolland and Landgoed Overlangbroek, which together form one of the most important surviving examples of ash coppice floodplain forest in the country. The area lies in the floodplain landscape of the Kromme Rijn, a former distributary of the Rhine that historically shaped the local soil into alternating sandy river ridges and silty backswamps. Over centuries this land was used for coppice wood, orchards, and meadows, and it still carries strong cultural-historical value as a managed Dutch estate landscape. Since 2015 the site has been designated as a Natura 2000 area under the European Habitats Directive. Its conservation value is closely tied to groundwater seepage from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Rhine, which feeds a very specific woodland habitat dominated by European ash and supporting an unusual community of base-loving mosses and liverworts.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
