Kutai National Park

Kutai National Park is a lowland tropical forest protected area located on the east coast of Borneo Island in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Established in 1982, the park spans approximately 1,986 square kilometers and represents one of the last significant remnants of lowland rainforest in the region. The park sits north of the Mahakam River and includes several notable lakes including Danau Maau, Santan, Besar, and Sirapan, creating a diverse landscape of freshwater ecosystems, coastal mangroves, and primary forest. Once part of the larger Kutai Game Reserve established in the 1970s, the area was elevated to national park status in an effort to combat extensive deforestation and human encroachment that had already destroyed large portions of the original forest. The park is situated roughly 120 kilometers north of the provincial capital Samarinda and is accessible from the nearby cities of Bontang and Sangatta, with two primary visitor entry points at Sangkima and Prevab.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
