Melimoyu National Park

Melimoyu National Park is a recently established protected area in Chile's remote Aysén Region, located within the labyrinthine Patagonian fjords and channels. The park encompasses approximately 1,055 square kilometers of rugged terrain in the commune of Cisnes, featuring the distinctive Melimoyu volcano as its centerpiece, which rises to 2,440 meters and provides a striking landmark for maritime navigation. The park was created in 2018 through a collaborative effort involving public lands and donations from Tompkins Conservation, forming part of the National Parks of Patagonia Network initiative. The landscape is dominated by extensive forests of southern beech species including lenga, coihue de Chiloé, mañío, and coigüe de Magallanes, which extend inland from the coast except at the highest elevations. The park borders the Gulf of Corcovado to the north, the Moraleda Channel to the west, and the Jacaf Channel to the south, while including much of Refugio Island within its boundaries.
