Lago di Alviano Nature Reserve

Lago di Alviano Nature Reserve is a protected wetland oasis located in the Tiber Valley of Umbria, in the province of Terni, central Italy. Established in 1990 and managed by WWF Italia, it covers roughly 900 hectares, of which a significant portion consists of shallow, marshy waters formed when the Tiber River was dammed near Alviano in 1963. The reserve is part of the larger Parco fluviale del Tevere and is classified both as a Site of Community Importance (SIC) and a Special Protection Area (ZPS) under the European Natura 2000 framework. Over the decades, the gradual silting and shallowing of the reservoir transformed the lake into one of the most important stopover sites for migratory waterbirds in central Italy. The combination of open water, reedbeds, wetland meadows, and hygrophilous woodland produces a rich mosaic of habitats that supports a wide variety of birdlife, mammals, and aquatic vegetation, making the oasis a key node in the regional network of wetland protected areas. The reserve also plays an active role in environmental education and scientific research through its on-site Centro di Educazione Ambientale, offering walking trails, elevated boardwalks over the water, and observation towers designed specifically for birdwatching and public engagement with wetland ecology.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
