Payar Island Marine Park

Payar Island Marine Park is a protected marine area in the northern part of the Strait of Malacca, off the coast of Kedah in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. It encompasses Payar, the largest island in the group, together with the smaller neighbouring islands of Kaca and Lembu to the east and Segantang to the west, all ringed by coral reefs. The park was officially gazetted in 1994 under Malaysian fisheries legislation, with the explicit purpose of safeguarding a region known for its rich marine biodiversity and healthy reef systems. Sheltered waters around the islands create conditions that have made the park one of the more frequented snorkelling and diving spots on the western seaboard of the peninsula, with sites such as the Coral Garden recognized for their dense and colourful soft coral formations. Beyond its recreational draw, the marine park holds real conservation significance because it shelters endangered fish species and supports reef communities that have come under pressure from warming seas and visitor impact. Visitor limits, weekly closures, and seasonal shutdowns have been introduced at various points to help the reefs recover from episodes of coral bleaching.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
