Réserve naturelle nationale de la dune Marchand

The Réserve naturelle nationale de la dune Marchand is a protected coastal dune landscape on the southern shore of the North Sea, in the far north of France. It lies east of Dunkirk, within the communes of Bray-Dunes and Zuydcoote, very near the Belgian border. Established in 1974 and expanded in 2024 to roughly 113 hectares, the reserve preserves a representative section of the Flemish dunes, a fragile coastal ecosystem shaped by wind, salt, and sand. Its ecological value lies in the unusually continuous sequence of natural dune habitats: mobile white dunes anchored by marram grass, fixed grey dunes enriched with woodland patches, humid dune slacks, and pockets of boreal and endemic flora. The site is also recognised for its rich fauna, including amphibians that have colonised the wet slacks, breeding songbirds, and the regular use of the area by harbour seals along the adjacent coastline. Beyond its biological role, the dune Marchand functions as a key link in a broader network of protected coastal landscapes in Hauts-de-France, integrated into the Natura 2000 network and managed jointly with surrounding dune areas acquired by the Conservatoire du littoral.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
