Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan

Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan is a federally protected coral reef complex located in the southern Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of the state of Veracruz in eastern Mexico. It is the northernmost reef system along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, organized into two main polygons, the Lobos polygon and the Tuxpan polygon, each containing several distinct reef formations scattered across the shallow continental shelf. The protected area covers roughly 30,000 hectares of marine and insular habitat. It combines submerged reef structures with sandy cays and small islands, anchoring an exceptionally productive nearshore ecosystem where tropical and subtropical marine species meet the Gulf's dynamic coastal environment. Coral formations, seagrass-associated fauna, and seasonal visitors such as sea turtles and dolphins all contribute to the system's ecological importance. Declared a Natural Protected Area in 2009 and incorporated into Mexico's national system of protected natural areas in 2016, the system reflects a growing recognition of the ecological value of the northern Gulf reefs. Today, it serves as a regional reference point for reef conservation, marine biodiversity research, and regulated eco-tourism, particularly around Isla Lobos.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
