Somuncurá Provincial Reserve

Somuncurá Provincial Reserve is a large protected natural area in Argentine Patagonia, straddling Río Negro Province and Chubut Province on a high volcanic plateau. The reserve safeguards a striking Patagonian steppe landscape defined by ancient basalt flows, eroded volcanic plains, and broad stepped mesas that have been shaped by millions of years of geological activity. The plateau is dotted with lagoon-like lakes rich in underwater vegetation, and several seasonal streams cross the terrain before eventually joining the Río Negro system. While some traditional land uses such as livestock grazing and petroleum exploration are still permitted within the reserve, the area remains an important refuge for wildlife in an otherwise arid region of Patagonia. The reserve is especially notable for its role in conserving endemic amphibian species found nowhere else on Earth, alongside archaeological traces of Argentina's indigenous cultures and a remote Patagonian bird community that includes flamingos and other steppe species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
