Sundarbans National Park

Sundarbans National Park is a national park and nature reserve located in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India, forming the core of the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and Biosphere Reserve. This vast protected area occupies a significant portion of the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest system situated on the Ganges Delta. The park comprises approximately 54 islands intersected by a complex network of distributaries from the Ganges River, creating a unique estuarine environment where tidal cycles shape the landscape twice daily. Established as a national park in 1984 after being designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and a tiger reserve in 1973, this area is renowned for being one of the last remaining strongholds of the Bengal tiger in the wild. The park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and gained Ramsar wetland status in 2019, recognizing its exceptional ecological significance as a biosphere reserve within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2001.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
