Ziarat Juniper Forest

The Ziarat Juniper Forest is a vast juniper woodland in the Ziarat district of Balochistan, Pakistan. Spread across the mountainous terrain around Ziarat town and Mount Zarghoon, it is the largest juniper forest in Pakistan and one of the most ecologically significant dry-temperate woodlands in the region. The forest is defined by the Pashtun juniper, a slow-growing and extraordinarily long-lived species whose oldest individuals are estimated to be between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. These ancient trees have earned the forest a reputation as a living relic of prehistory, and the surrounding landscape of ridges and steep slopes provides habitat for a varied community of mountain mammals and birds. Recognized as a wildlife sanctuary in 1971 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2013, the Ziarat Juniper Forest has been nominated for World Heritage status. It remains both a conservation priority and a cultural landmark in Balochistan, valued for its ecological, scientific, and historical importance.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
