Alvarado Lagoon System

The Alvarado Lagoon System is one of the most significant coastal wetland complexes along Mexico's Gulf Coast, occupying a broad stretch of the southern Gulf Coastal Plain in the state of Veracruz. It is centered on the brackish Alvarado Lagoon, a major estuary where one of Mexico's largest rivers, the Papaloapan, empties into the Gulf of Mexico alongside several smaller river systems, including the Blanco, Acula, Limón, and Camarón. More than a single body of water, the system is a mosaic of tidal channels, interior lagoons, mangrove forests, palm woodlands, swamp forests, sedge marshes, coastal dunes, and riparian oak stands. The Papaloapan basin and the coastal lagoons together create a transitional environment where freshwater, brackish, and marine influences overlap. Recognized for its biological richness, the system supports an exceptionally diverse bird community, manatee habitat, crocodiles, and a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2004, it represents a vital ecological reference point for the Mexican Gulf Coastal Plain.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
