Reinheimen National Park

Reinheimen National Park is a vast protected mountain area in central Norway, established in 2006 to preserve one of the largest remaining wilderness landscapes in Western Norway. The park covers 1,969 square kilometers spanning parts of Innlandet and Møre og Romsdal counties, encompassing portions of six municipalities including Lesja, Skjåk, Vågå, Lom, Fjord, and Rauma. The protected area encompasses much of the Tafjordfjella mountain range as well as critical reindeer habitat in the northern Ottadalen valley, creating a continuous protected landscape that maintains ecological connections across the Norwegian highlands. The park represents an exceptionally well-preserved alpine ecosystem that remains largely undisturbed by human development. Its rugged mountain terrain rises to peaks exceeding 2,000 meters above sea level, while the landscape transitions dramatically from the sharply pointed peaks and knife-edge ridges of the western section to the gentler plateaus and broader valleys of the eastern reaches. This topographical diversity supports a remarkable range of habitats and species, making Reinheimen one of the most ecologically significant protected areas in southern Norway.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
