Swain Reefs National Park

Swain Reefs National Park is a marine protected area in North Queensland, Australia, situated in the Capricorn Group of the Coral Sea approximately 703 kilometres north of Brisbane. The park encompasses a cluster of nine small sandy cays with a combined land area of nine hectares, surrounded by extensive coral reef systems that extend into deeper oceanic waters. Established in 1995 and managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, this remote park is recognized as an Important Bird Area due to its internationally significant seabird nesting colonies. The cays support over one percent of the world's breeding population of roseate terns, with up to 25,000 non-breeding individuals recorded in the area, making it one of the most significant seabird habitats in the Coral Sea region. The surrounding marine environment supports diverse fish populations, including the rockcod at depths reaching approximately 220 metres.
