Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is a protected area in eastern Rwanda covering 1,122 square kilometers along the international border with Tanzania. Established in 1934 by the Belgian colonial government, it is the largest protected wetland in East-Central Africa and encompasses a diverse landscape of savanna, montane habitats, and extensive papyrus swamps. The park is named for the Kagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into Lake Ihema and several smaller lakes. This complex system of lakes and wetlands comprises over a third of the parks total area, creating one of the most significant freshwater ecosystems in the region. Once nearly depleted of large mammals due to poaching and human conflict, Akagera has undergone remarkable restoration since 2010 through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and the African Parks Network, successfully reintroducing lions, black rhinos, and white rhinos to reclaim its status as a premier wildlife destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
