Charles Darwin Reserve

Charles Darwin Reserve is a privately managed nature reserve in the north-eastern part of the Western Australian Wheatbelt, a region where large expanses of native vegetation have otherwise been heavily modified by agriculture. Covering roughly 686 square kilometres of former pastoral country, it sits on the transitional zone between the South West Botanical Province and the Eremean Province, an ecologically meaningful boundary between more temperate southwestern systems and Australia's arid interior. The reserve protects intact stands of old-growth eucalypt woodland, sand-plain heath, and associated mallee and shrubland habitats in a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. It was purchased in 2003 by Bush Heritage Australia, with support from Chris Darwin, great-great-grandson of the naturalist Charles Darwin after whom the property is named. Together with the neighbouring Mount Gibson Sanctuary, the reserve forms part of a substantial Important Bird Area recognised by BirdLife International for its populations of malleefowl and other birds of the arid and mallee biomes. The reserve's significance lies in its role as one of the largest consolidated blocks of relatively unfragmented habitat remaining in a landscape otherwise dominated by wheat farming and sheep grazing. Its combination of old hollow-bearing trees, sand-plain vegetation, and transitional botanical provinces makes it an important refuge for woodland-dependent birds, medium-sized mammals such as kangaroos and euros, and a range of other native fauna typical of inland southwestern Australia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
