Fortuna Forest Reserve

Fortuna Forest Reserve is a protected forest reserve in the mountains of Chiriquí Province in western Panama. Covering approximately 206 square kilometers, it sits where the eastern foothills of the Cordillera de Talamanca meet the transition to the Cordillera Central. The reserve is notable for combining high biodiversity with a working hydroelectric dam inside its boundaries, making it both an ecological refuge and an energy-producing landscape. The reserve contains mountain forests and cloud forest on volcanic soils, receiving very high rainfall throughout the year. It holds the highest number of endemic species of any protected area in Panama and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for its significant bird populations, including species such as the resplendent quetzal and the military macaw. As a sustainable-use protected area, Fortuna Forest Reserve demonstrates how conservation, scientific research, and renewable energy infrastructure can coexist in a single tropical mountain landscape of Central America.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
