Grand Meadow National Nature Park

Grand Meadow National Nature Park is a protected area in southeastern Ukraine established in 2006 to preserve the remaining fragments of the historic Great Meadow floodplain along the Dnieper River. The park occupies the south bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Vasylivka Raion, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, covering approximately 16,756 hectares of wetland, steppe, and coastal landscapes. Once a vast 80,000-hectare floodplain known locally as the Great Meadow or Kinskyi Plavni, most of this historic wetland was submerged in 1956 following the creation of the reservoir. The park now protects the remaining ridges, coastal strips, islands, and wetland areas that survived the inundation. The area holds exceptional ecological significance as one of the largest transmigration spots for waterbirds in Eastern Europe, supporting critical nesting, foraging, and resting grounds for numerous species. In June 2023, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam during the Russian invasion caused the reservoir to drain, significantly impacting the park's hydrology and raising serious concerns about drought and ecological damage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
