Kerala's largest freshwater lake and a protected Ramsar wetland.

Sasthamkotta Lake

Sasthamkotta Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Indian state of Kerala, lying in the southern part of the country's western coastal belt. Set amid a landscape of low hills and the alluvial plains of the Kallada River, the lake functions simultaneously as a drinking water source, a fishing ground, and a recognized wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, designated in November 2002. The lake is closely tied to the cultural identity of the surrounding area through the ancient Sastha temple on its bank, from which it takes its name. It supplies drinking water to roughly half a million people in the Quilon (Kollam) district and supports a diverse freshwater ecosystem, while the purity of its water has been linked to the presence of large populations of _cavaborus_ larvae that consume bacteria in the lake. Beyond its ecological and cultural role, Sasthamkotta Lake faces mounting environmental pressure from agricultural encroachment, soil erosion, domestic sewage, and reduced groundwater recharge. A state-led Conservation and Management Action Plan was prepared in 1999 under the National Lake Conservation Plan to guide its long-term protection and sustainable use.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
