Vembanad Lake

Vembanad is the longest lake in India and the largest in the state of Kerala. Stretching roughly 96.5 kilometres through Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts, the lake forms the central artery of the famous Kerala backwaters and is known by different local names along its shores, including Vembanad Lake in the north and central areas, Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, and Kochi Lake around the city of Kochi. The lake is more than a scenic waterway; it is a sprawling wetland system that drains around 40 percent of Kerala's land area and is fed by six major rivers. Sections of it, especially the southern Kuttanad region, lie below sea level, making it one of the very few places in the world where farming continues below the tides. The lake supports large populations of waterbirds, sustains traditional fishing communities, hosts the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, and anchors houseboat tourism that has become synonymous with Kerala's backwater experience. Vembanad is recognized internationally as a Ramsar wetland of importance and nationally under India's wetland conservation programme, yet it also faces serious ecological pressures. Reclamation, pollution, invasive water hyacinth growth, and the controversial Thanneermukkom salt water barrier have all reshaped the lake's ecology, making it both a celebrated natural landmark and a landscape under active conservation concern.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
