Remote forest wilderness in Zambia's North-Western Province

West Lunga National Park

West Lunga National Park is a remote protected area in the North-Western Province of Zambia, covering approximately 1,700 square kilometers of dense forest. It lies between the West Lunga River and Kabompo River, about 10 kilometers north of the M8 road connecting Solwezi to Kabompo. The park holds exceptional ecological significance as the only forest-covered national park in Zambia, representing the rare Zambezian Cryptosepalum dry forests ecoregion that exists only in scattered patches across the southwest of the province and extends marginally into Angola. This expansive evergreen forest forms the largest of its kind in Africa outside the equatorial zone, characterized by dense Cryptosepalum trees locally known as mukwe, which create a closed canopy over sandy, well-drained soils.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
