Lauhanvuori National Park

Lauhanvuori National Park is a protected wilderness area in the South Ostrobothnia region of western Finland, spanning the border between the municipalities of Kauhajoki and Isojoki. Established in 1982, the park covers 53 square kilometers of rolling pine forestland, spring-fed brooks, and extensive peatland ecosystems. The park's focal point is Lauhanvuori mountain, a 231-meter-high moraine formation that stands as one of the highest points in western Finland and carries a remarkable geological history dating back to the retreat of the last Ice Age around 9500 BCE. Unlike much of the surrounding landscape that was once submerged beneath ancient Lake Ancylus, the Lauhanvuori summit emerged as an island, preserving ancient soils and creating unique ecological conditions that support species more typical of much more northerly latitudes. The park represents an important conservation area in Finland, protecting both representative boreal forest ecosystems and rare wetland habitats that harbor species found nowhere else in the country.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
