Faure Island

Faure Island is a roughly 58 square kilometre island located east of the Peron Peninsula in Shark Bay, Western Australia. It lies in line with the famous Monkey Mia resort on the western side of Shark Bay, and falls within one of Australia's most extraordinary marine and coastal landscapes, where desert meets sea in a UNESCO World Heritage setting. The island combines a pastoral lease with formal nature reserve status, and is fully owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy as the Faure Island Sanctuary. Surrounded by the Shark Bay Marine Park and the broader Shark Bay World Heritage Site, it plays a significant ecological role both on land and at sea. Its red and white sandy plains, claypans, and coastal mangroves support breeding seabirds, migratory waders, and a growing community of reintroduced native mammals once lost to livestock grazing and feral predators. Faure Island is most notable for combining arid-zone terrestrial habitats with outstanding marine surroundings. It serves as a refuge for seabird colonies and migratory shorebirds moving along the East Asian Australasian Flyway, and has become a key site for the rewilding of small to medium sized marsupials and rodents that were extirpated from the island during the pastoral era.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
