Phou Xieng Thong National Protected Area

Phou Xieng Thong National Protected Area is a national biodiversity conservation area spanning parts of Salavan and Champasak provinces in southern Laos, about 50 kilometres north of Pakse. It is the only protected area in the country that directly borders the Mekong River, with its western edge defined by near-vertical cliffs rising from the river to an inland plateau. The park protects a landscape shaped by this dramatic transition from lowland riverbank to forested plateau, where elevations climb from roughly 100 metres along the Mekong to more than 700 metres at the summit of Phou Nangam, the park's highest point. Forests are mixed with exposed rocky flats across the plateau, creating a mosaic of semi-evergreen woodland and open terrain. The area is recognised as an Important Bird Area and is valued for its populations of threatened mammals, reptiles, and birds, including species such as the green peafowl and the Indochinese leopard. As an ecotourism destination, it represents one of the key natural sites along the Lao stretch of the Mekong, directly opposite Thailand's Pha Taem National Park.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
