Ischigualasto Provincial Park

Ischigualasto Provincial Park is a large protected area in the northeast of San Juan Province, in northwestern Argentina, where the arid foothills of the Andes meet the Central Sierras. Often called Valle de la Luna, or Valley of the Moon, its wind-eroded badlands, vividly colored cliffs, and otherworldly rock shapes give the landscape a striking lunar appearance that has made it one of the most recognizable geological sites in South America. Beyond its scenery, the park is celebrated worldwide for its paleontological importance. Its layered rock sequence preserves an almost continuous record of the Triassic Period, roughly 230 million years ago, when the first dinosaurs were evolving. Together with neighboring Talampaya National Park in La Rioja Province, Ischigualasto was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its exceptional scientific value. The park is set in a dry continental climate with sparse Monte shrub vegetation, strong winds, and dramatic temperature swings. Visitors typically experience it through guided circuits that link named rock formations, fossil-bearing sites, and a small on-site natural history museum that interprets one of the most important Triassic fossil beds on Earth.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
