Alania National Park
Alania National Park is a federally protected high-mountain reserve in the southwestern part of the Republic of North Ossetia in the Russian Federation. Created in 1998, it guards a representative stretch of the northern slopes of the Central Caucasus, where deeply carved river valleys, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and coniferous forests converge. The park sits within the historic region of Mountain Digoría and is closely linked with Ossetian cultural identity, including notable medieval towers, sanctuaries, and burial sites across its protected zone. Its location at the crossroads of European, Mediterranean, and Central Asian biogeographic influences gives the area an unusually rich mixture of plant and animal species.
The park protects roughly 550 square kilometers of vertical terrain, climbing from lower forested canyons to elevations above 4,600 meters. Within its borders there are dozens of glaciers, cascading waterfalls, glacial lakes, peat mires, and dramatic gorges carved by tributaries of the Urukh River. Its accessibility is intentionally limited, with a single mountain road entering through the Akhsinты Canyon, which helps preserve the integrity of the surrounding ecosystems. The reserve is paired with the neighboring North Ossetian Nature Reserve, together forming one of the most important protected-area complexes in the North Caucasus.
Alania National Park also serves as a center for environmental education, scientific research, ecological tourism, and the conservation of Ossetian cultural heritage. Visitors can explore trekking routes through the Urukh basin, encounter archaeological sites such as the Donifar-Lezgor necropolis, and observe rare Caucasian wildlife in genuinely wild surroundings. The park's combination of dramatic physical geography, ecological richness, and living cultural landscapes gives it a distinctive profile among Russia's national parks.
