Alton National Park

Alton National Park is a compact protected area in South West Queensland, Australia, situated approximately 371 kilometres west of Brisbane and 75 kilometres east of St George. The park occupies 5.58 square kilometres within the Brigalow Belt South bioregion, a landscape characterised by remnant vegetation communities that once covered much of interior Queensland. Established in 1973, the reserve was created to protect areas of limited and unusual vegetation alongside the Moonie Highway, which bisects the park. Despite its modest size, Alton supports remarkable biodiversity, with 191 documented animal species and four rare or threatened species recorded within its boundaries. The park is surrounded by grazing properties and represents a significant ecological island within an agricultural landscape, preserving habitat for plant species and wildflowers that have become increasingly scarce across the region.
