Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is a 66-square-kilometer protected area in Southern Province, Zambia, that encompasses the Zambian portion of Victoria Falls along with adjacent wildlife habitats. The park derives its name from the Kololo and Lozi languages, where "Mosi-oa-Tunya" translates to "The Smoke that Thunders" a vivid description of the massive curtain of falling water that creates a perpetual mist visible for kilometers. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, the park occupies a dramatic landscape along the Zambezi River, extending from the Songwe Gorge below the falls in a northwest arc along approximately 20 kilometers of riverbank. The park forms the southwestern boundary of the city of Livingstone and is twin to Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side of the border. The protected area encompasses two distinct sections: a wildlife park at its northwestern end and the land immediately adjacent to Victoria Falls themselves, where the world's largest curtain of falling water creates a unique micro-ecosystem of rainforest sustained by the perpetual spray.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
